I know what you are saying – road trips are awesome! And I agree. They are actually one of my favorite types of trips to take because there is no expectation. There is no limit. You can arrive at one place and if it doesn’t appeal to you, you can leave and find another. This is a vast contrast to traveling by flying as once you’ve reached a destination, you’re pretty much restricted.
Road trips are also easy to do and cheap. Although it is possible to find cheap flights road trips are reliably a cheap way to travel.
Road trips really are about the journey more so than the destination. Although family road trips aren’t quite like the movie, they are fun nonetheless. Now, don’t get me wrong. As with anything in life there are both good and bad parts of road trips. It can get tiring. It can get boring. So what do you do when you know you have another 5 hours until you see a hint of civilization?
Here are some tips to help you make it through.
Do some online surveys
If you’ve got some spare time on the road, why not spend it earning cash? There are loads of paid survey sites where you can earn money online just by completing surveys. Many of these sites have mobile apps making them super convenient and you can even get paid via Paypal!
Take The Right Equipment
Your trip will only be a success if you take the right tools. Make sure you have everything you need for great road trips.
Create more than one playlist before you leave
Everyone knows to create a music playlist before they leave home, but here a tip – create MORE than one. This is a pretty simple thing to do, but it can actually be a way to keep the trip interesting. I like to create a playlist for old songs, new ones and backwards ones. Yes, backwards songs. Everyone has to guess which song it is that is playing backwards. Don’t judge, it’s fun.
Make stops on the way
This is one of the most important things you can do and one of the only things that really requires preparation. Marking out places to stop can give you short bursts of satisfaction when you reach them.
Divide the driving
Driving for long periods of time is mentally exhausting. Give each other a break by dividing this up between the adults in the car. My wife and I would do 45 minutes each and the driver ALWAYS got to pick the music. Let this be known.
Plan some attractions on the way
Get yourself excited and book some attractions on the way. This is a great way to see things that you would not otherwise have seen had you not been on a road trip. Read about booking attractions online here.
There are plenty of other ways to make the time pass on the road. What are your tips?
